Hi, I'm
Emily.

I'm a particle physicist turned data scientist, with a PhD from the University of Edinburgh.

I've always been fascinated by science and by the exchange of ideas and helping children fall in love with subjects that they may have originally found difficult or intimidating. I do not believe in geniuses. I have proven in the past that excellence is a matter of having the right enviroment for learning, the right guidance and doing the work. Regardless of the starting point, my aim is always an A*.

I previously tutored GCSE and A-level Maths and Physics, and now I'm returning to one-to-one teaching alongside my work in data science.

Years since I first tutored

Maths & Physics

Before the PhD,
there was this.

I grew up in Bulgaria and spent much of school immersed in Maths, Physics and as a hobby, swimming. Competitions, problem solving and trying to understand how things worked were part of my life long before university. That experience still shapes how I teach today.

Since reading Dan Brown's 'Angels & Demons', I also developped a dream to work at CERN one day.

My first day as a CERN scientist.

I was rocking the scientist look back then.

I got to do some actual physics and present at conferences.

My doctoral research focused on Higgs boson physics within the ATLAS experiment. Big part of being a PhD student is learning how to present complex ideas simply. I also did teaching and mentoring of undergraduate students, which I loved.

Living and working abroad also gave me plenty of opportunities to explore beyond the lab.

The method depends
on the student.

01

Understand who they are

A personal approach is key. This is why I only teach one-to-one.

02

Identify problem areas

We build understanding of new topics and identify gaps in known topics.

03

Find the right explanation

If one explanation does not click, it is on the teacher to find another, which works.

04

Practise independently

The goal is for the student to develop motivation and independence to do the final step on their own, which is simple repetition.

★★★★★
Highly recommend Emily, she has been fantastic with my children. She is calm and empathetic and tailors her approach to the personality of the child. Within 5 weeks of tutoring both my children have improved by two grades. Both my children appreciate the difference that she has made already to their understanding of maths.

★★★★★
I had the pleasure of working with Emily for nearly 5 years in the particle physics department of the University of Edinburgh, where we contributed to a number of projects for the ATLAS experiment at CERN. She is exceptionally diligent and has an incredible knack for conveying the concepts of her work in both presentational and personal settings. I have no doubt she would make a wonderful tutor to those of all skill levels.

★★★★★
Emily has got an extremely solid background and knowledge in both physics and maths, and I've been impressed by her academic abilities. In addition, and more importantly, Emily has got excellent interpersonal and communication skills. She's a great listener, patient and pedagogical and passionate about physics and maths. I've no doubt she'll be able to pass on this motivation and be an excellent tutor overall.

Curious in the classroom.
Curious everywhere else.

Outside work and tutoring, I love swimming, gardening and travelling whenever I get the chance.
